Wining about Madrid: Bodegas Ricla

Bodegas Ricla is one of my favourite wine bars to haunt in Madrid, however it did not start out as a wine bar. Opened in 1867 as a wine shop on the outskirts of Plaza Mayor, it is one of Madrid´s jewels hidden in plain sight. 30 odd years ago Anna, the current owner, took over and quickly became famous for traditional home cooking that they serve along with the excellent and ever-changing wines. Nowadays the bar is still run by Anna and her two sons, Emilio and Jose, and is a blend of a traditional Madrid tavern and a contemporary wine bar.

What to Quaff

Ricla´s wine selection is carefully chosen by Emilio and he is always excited to share his new find - which will usually be on the “Vinos del Mes(ish)” sign. Ricla´s philosophy is to have iconic styled wines from every major D.O in Spain and ones from up-and-coming regions as well. A personal favourite of mine is a wine from D.O Tierras de Leon - Pardevalles in which they use the grape Alabrín, a wonderful example of a wine from one of the lesser known wine regions here in Spain. They are also proud to have Madrid´s oldest Vermut tap, which pours the delicious Yzaguirre.

Star Pairings

Borsao Tres Picos, D.O Campo de Borja, Garnacha paired with Callos. Anna is famous around the local area and beyond for her callos(tripe) a dish that I have tried in many places all over Spain and not one even came close to being compared with Anna´s - a true hearty delight!

Vermut Yzaguirre paired with Boquerones. Another dish that the locals flock towards is Boquerones (Anchovies) marinated in white wine vinegar for 4-6 hours and served with olive oil, garlic and parsley. Eating this vibrant dish washed down with a glass of vermut will set your taste buds alight…a most divine pairing!

Conclusion

Ricla is small hole-in-wall establishment from yesteryear that fills up quickly, where you´ll be standing shoulder to shoulder with locals thirsty to taste Emilio´s new find and wolf down Anna´s spectacular fare. If you´re looking for an authentic tavern/wine bar experience in Madrid, look no further than Bodegas Ricla.
